This technology was driven in the late 1980’s by the need for an engine coolant to be able to protect modern diesel engines.

The requirement for engines to produce more power with less weight, better efficiency and reduced emissions, bought about the introduction of exotic alloys into the metallurgy of modern engines.

With these alloys came corrosion and erosion problems associated with dissimilar metals in a liquid environment – namely the cooling system.

It was found that conventional chemistry coolants, which had worked fine for cast iron engines, no longer had the capacity to protect these alloys from damage.

OEM’s were also striving towards longer service intervals and extended warranty periods.
It became necessary to re-invent the wheel.
Many years of research resulted in the development of OAT coolants which have addressed all of the issues required of them with the added benefit of being harmless to the environment.

This depletion prevents the corrosion inhibitor package from being able to effectively protect your engine components from corrosion and erosion damage including liner pitting.

Potential Problems with Ethylene Glycol
  • Poorly maintained systems can result in coolant dilution if the radiator is topped off with plain water.
  • Glycol below 25% becomes corrosive particularly so around the 12% level.
  • The anti-freeze properties of Glycol can be immediately disregarded in the tropics
  • A 50% Glycol coolant mix will only raise the boil point by 8 degrees celsius above the temperature set by the cap pressure.
Why Recommend Glycol?
Major heavy duty diesel engine manufacturers are northern hemisphere based. Severe northern hemisphere winters dictate the use of anti-freeze as a matter of course. Tropical regions are a small portion of the market to them.

The work safe exposure standard working group recommends the following exposure standards for ethylene glycol:

  • TWA 60mg / m³
  • STEL 120mg / m³
